General Information on Agra

Located on the banks of the Yamuna River in northern Uttar Pradesh, Agra is a captivating city and a popular tourist destination. Founded by Badal Singh in 1475, Agra is referenced as "Agrraba" in the Mahabharata. It once served as the capital for the Lodhi and Mughal dynasties. In the 16th and 17th centuries, under the patronage of Mughal rulers like Akbar, Shah Jahan, and Jehangir, Agra flourished as a hub of art, culture, learning, and commerce.

Agra is home to numerous historic and prestigious landmarks that reflect the city's rich tradition and culture. In addition to UNESCO World Heritage Sites like the iconic Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and Fatehpur Sikri, the city boasts other attractions such as Itmad-Ud-Daulah's Tomb, Mariam's Tomb, Akbar's Tomb in Sikandra, Jama Masjid, and Chini Ka Rauza. These sites make Agra a treasure trove of historical and architectural wonders.

The city's relaxed lifestyle, cherished architecture, exquisite jewelry, and intricate handicrafts make Agra one of the most remarkable cities in the world. Festivals are celebrated with great enthusiasm and inclusivity, transcending caste distinctions and bringing the community together in joyful celebration.

The top administrator in Agra is the Commissioner, who oversees planned development and proper administration. The district magistrate ensures law and order, while block development officers and chief development officers play significant roles. Agra Municipal Corporation provides essential civic amenities, and the Nagar Nigam addresses infrastructure issues.

The city is easily accessible from all parts of India, with the Kheria Airport serving domestic flights and major rail stations connecting Agra to key locations. National Highways 2, 3, and 11, along with private and state transport buses, offer convenient travel options within and to Agra. With a semi-arid, tropical climate, the best time to visit Agra is from October to March when the weather is pleasant and ideal for sightseeing.
